18th
century Natural Philosophy – in many aspects synonymous with Newtonian physics
– had a considerable impact on cultural life. Showing an understanding of, or
at least showing an interest in the new science was important for the cultured
circles in the age of Enlightenment. As art reflects the culture of a society
it comes as no surprise that this public interest in science is recorded and
represented by artists of the period. This paper compares representations of
this new Natural Philosophy in the visual arts of England and the Netherlands
of the 18th century.
